Dual Run Capacitor Testing Guide: 45+5 µF vs 45+7.5 µF in Texas Heat

By Technical Operations Lead • Verified October 2026 • Reading Time: 5 Minutes

Understanding Terminal Configurations: C, HERM & FAN

A dual run capacitor contains three top terminal posts labeled C (Common), HERM (Hermetic Compressor), and FAN (Condenser Fan Motor). The Common terminal connects directly to incoming 240V line voltage, while internal capacitive windings phase-shift electrical current to the respective start windings of both motors simultaneously.

In a 45+5 µF capacitor, the 45 microfarad circuit powers the hermetic compressor start winding, while the 5 microfarad circuit drives the condenser fan motor.

Larger multi-ton systems in Windermere and Round Rock frequently specify 45+7.5 µF capacitors to provide necessary starting torque for heavy 1/3 HP condenser fan motors.

Installing an incorrect 5 µF capacitor on a motor requiring 7.5 µF causes the fan to run hot and cycle off on thermal overload.

How to Test Microfarad Ratings with a Digital Multimeter

Testing a capacitor requires turning off high-voltage disconnects, discharging terminals across a 20,000-ohm resistor, and disconnecting lead wires. Setting a true RMS multimeter to capacitance mode (MFD or µF), technicians place the common probe on terminal C and test against HERM and FAN terminals individually.

Most manufacturer capacitors carry an industry tolerance of plus or minus 6 percent.

For a 45 µF rating, acceptable readings range strictly between 42.3 µF and 47.7 µF.

Any reading dropping below 42.3 µF demands immediate component replacement through our emergency AC repair service before compressor lockup occurs.

Why 440V Ratings Outperform 370V in Central Texas

While older builder-grade units frequently include 370VAC capacitors, Central Texas ambient conditions require heavy-duty 440VAC models. Higher voltage ratings indicate thicker dielectric barrier layers capable of absorbing inductive voltage spikes generated when utility grids fluctuate during peak 105-degree afternoon electrical grid demands.

A 440V capacitor can safely replace a 370V unit in any residential application, providing superior dielectric headroom without altering motor operating speeds.

Our technicians carry professional-grade 440V capacitors on every service truck throughout Falcon Pointe, Blackhawk, and Round Rock.
