Pflugerville TX: AC Blowing Warm Air at 2 AM
Location: Falcon Pointe (ZIP 78660) • Verified Dispatch • Reading Time: 3 Minutes
Homeowner Incident Report & Initial Symptoms
A homeowner in the Falcon Pointe neighborhood awakened at 2:15 AM to find indoor house temperatures rising steadily to 83 degrees. The indoor air handler was circulating unconditioned air through supply registers, while the outdoor condensing fan was spinning but the compressor was emitting an intermittent low humming vibration.
Pflugerville had just experienced its 32nd consecutive day of 100-degree afternoon heat along the SH-130 corridor.
The homeowner called our 24/7 dispatch hotline, and an on-duty Texas TDLR Class A technician arrived on site within 35 minutes.
Diagnostic Findings & Electrical Measurement
Testing the outdoor condensing unit electrical compartment revealed a swollen 45+5 µF 370V dual run capacitor with a bulged top terminal dome. Testing terminals with a true RMS digital multimeter showed the FAN side measured 4.8 µF, but the HERM compressor terminal had degraded completely to 8.2 µF.
Because capacitance was far below the 42.3 µF minimum threshold, the compressor could not generate sufficient starting torque.
Every startup attempt drew excessive Locked Rotor Amps (LRA) until the internal thermal overload safety tripped.
Solution & System Restoration
The technician installed a heavy-duty 45+5 µF 440V round capacitor rated for 85°C operating temperatures and cleaned pitted 24V contactor points. The compressor started smoothly on the initial try, drawing 13.8 running amps against a 17.5 FLA nameplate rating, dropping register supply temperatures to 56 degrees within 15 minutes.
Total diagnostic and repair time was under 40 minutes, restoring restful comfort to the household before dawn.
